Aurora High’s gymnastics team competed in two competitions last week.
The ever-competitive Suburban League Championship meet at Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge on Feb. 3 saw Kassidy Fry and Hannah Salgado compete against more than 50 gymnasts from eight other local school districts, including Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Highland, Hudson Nordonia, North Royalton, Stow-Munroe, Twinsburg and Wadsworth. Hudson and Brecksville-Broadview Heights qualified for state team competition in 2021.
Fry had strong competition as she competed in all four events and scored 8.0 on vault, 7.6 on bars, 8.6 on beam and 8.8 on floor with a 33.00 on general competition. Salgado placed fourth on floor (9.5), third on beam (9.4), second on bars (9.35), and second in all-around with a score of 37.15. This was Salgado’s highest all-around score of the season, as she was also rewarded with an all-conference first-team selection. Brecksville ended up taking most of the competition material along with the team competition.
On February 10, Chalk it Up hosted the final meet of the regular season which also honored the 2022 senior gymnasts.
Teams from Aurora, West Geauga, NDCL, Mayfield, Chagrin Falls and Orange had an exciting encounter. Aurora sophomore Kaitlin Zgonc was back for the Greenmen and came back strong, placing third on bars (8.05), fourth on balance beam (8.3) and fifth on floor (8.1). ). Fry placed third on balance beam (8.4), fourth on vault (8.3), fourth on floor (8.6) and fourth in all-around (32.75). Salgado placed first in all four events (vault 9.05, bars 9.25, beam 9.25, floor 9.0) and the all-around (36.55).
Next up for the Aurora gymnasts is the sectional tournament on Sunday, February 20 at Hudson High School. The top 12 gymnasts from each event will qualify for the District Tournament on Saturday, February 26 at Mentor.
