Avon gymnastics team heads to district meet – Morning Journal

Avon’s gymnastics team heads to this weekend’s district meet and is one step away from the state meet.

The Eagles finished third in the Feb. 19 sectional meet in Hudson with a score of 139.500, behind sectional champion Kenston (146.600) and Hudson (145.225).

The top four teams and top 12 individuals from each event qualified for the February 26 district meet at Mentor.

Avon’s top performer was Cassie Wiersch, who finished seventh in the all-around with a 35.825. She earned scores of 9.025 (vault), 8.800 (bars), 9.350 (beam) and 8.650 (floor).

The top 12 finishers for Avon include:

Beam – Emily Sussman (tie seventh), Reilly Small (eighth)

Floor – Maddie Geiger (seventh)

Jump – Small (tied eighth)

• During the section meeting of February 18 in Hudson, several sector gymnastics qualified for the Mentor district. They included:

All-around – Emma Nolan, North Olmsted (fourth, 35.935), Carley Abbott, Olmsted Falls (fifth, 35.875), Emma Maher, Rocky River (seventh, 35.425), Lydia Bubar, North Ridgeville (11th, 34.775)

Bars – Abbott (third), Nolan (fifth), Bubar (ninth)

Beam – Nolan (fifth), Maher (10th), Payton Krafchek (11th)

Sol – Nolan (tie sixth), Abbott (tie seventh), Maher (tie seventh), Jordan Desmone, Olmsted Falls (11th)

Vault – Maher (tied sixth), Abbott (seventh), Nolan (tied 10th), Sophia Kontak, Westlake (tied 11th)
