A year after finishing second in the state, Kenston’s gymnastics team is once again heading to state competition.

On Feb. 26, the Bombers secured their spot in the March 4-5 event at Hilliard Bradley High School thanks to a fourth-place finish at the Mentor District Meet.

“The Northeast District meet is always one of the best meet in the state because a lot of girls advancing from our area tend to rank high in the state tournament,” said the coach of Kenston, Nicole Martorello. “We’re super excited to do the state tournament again.”

Kenston had a team score of 143.1500. Brecksville-Broadview Heights was the team champion with a 146.100 with Hudson (144.175) second and Brunswick (143.650) third.

“It wasn’t our best performance overall, but I think it makes us more eager to work hard this week to prepare for the states,” Martorello said. “We have a lot of talent and potential to do great things and compete with some of the best.”

The top six teams and 17 individuals from each event qualified for state.

Kenston’s top finisher was Mary Cowan, who finished second in the all-around with a score of 37,000. Aurora’s Hannah Salgado won the all-around in a close heat with a 37.100.

Rowan scored 9.550 on beam and 9.475 on floor. Both scores finished second in the event. She scored 9.225 on vault (fourth) and 8.750 on bars.

The Bombers’ Presley Gabram finished seventh in the all-around with a 36.350. His best score was 9.475 on beam, which finished fifth in the event.

Kenston’s Claire Roch was an individual floor qualifier with an 11th-place finish.
